Chifundo UK

Chifundo UK was registered in England in March 2015 and works with its sister charity Chanasa in Malawi registered in April 2014. The aims of both organisations are to empower women and girls in Malawi through income generation and helping with education. There are 6 groups of unemployed women, in total 50, who meet in different poor areas of Blantyre. They are provided with a rented room, equipment and materials and sew products for orders. They make sustainable fashion, accessories, and household products which are then sold in Malawi and the UK. The women receive fair payment for their work and training in the skills required. Two part time workers are employed to manage the work. A project called the Lotus Project started in 2019. This is a menstrual health project which aims to empower and keep girls in school throughout each month. The girls are each provided with a Lotus pack with washable sanitary pads and other items together with training. The Chanasa Women make the pads and provide the training. It also raises awareness amongst boys, staff and mothers while mothers are shown how to sew reusable sanitary pads and a simple cotton bag.
