Frequently asked questions

. . . or ask Joanna as we like to call them!

What does BAFTS mean?

BAFTS is an acronym from our original name ‘British Association for Fair Trade Shops’. Following a vote from our members, we now operate as BAFTS – Fair Trade Network UK because we are the network member for WFTO in the United Kingdom.

How do I become a BAFTS member?

You can learn all about become a member of BAFTS here.

Aren’t fair trade shops just 'hippy shops'?

Not at all. Some of our shop members do sell a lot of self consciously “ethnic” items of clothing, incense etc but lots of fair trade products are design led with a strong contemporary feel. You will find ranges from some of our supplier members in upmarket gift shops. We are here to break the stereotypes!

If it’s fair trade does that mean it’s recycled?

Not necessarily. All BAFTS members sign up to the Ten Principles of Fair Trade which means they have to respect the environment and tackle climate change, and lots of fair trade items are skilfully upcycled and recycled from things like saris, bicycle tyres, driftwood, drinks cans etc. But there are lots that are made from natural materials that are good for the environment in other ways.Fair trade is about supporting traditional and artisanal skills and increasing incomes for marginalised people in a planet friendly way.

I’m part of a Fairtrade Towns group. How can we support BAFTS?

Great. The most important thing we can all do to support fair trade artisans and makers is buying their products so look for the BAFTS label on products in your local fair trade shop, zero waste / eco store or museum or gallery. We welcome fair trade supporters to come along to our annual Conference and if you would like someone from BAFTS to come and speak to your group, contact us (link to contact form here) Your group can become a Friend of BAFTS for £20 a year which means you get our newsletter and a logo for your website

I want to buy a gift from a member of BAFTS - does this guarantee the item is fair trade?

Not necessarily – if you’re buying from a shop, the item could be locally made, recycled, eco friendly. Especially for things like greetings cards a soaps it’s not always possible to buy fair trade versions. Never be afraid to ask the question – our members love telling the stories behind all their products

I bought an item from one of your members and I’m not happy with the service I received, can you sort it out for me?

Sorry this happened to you but unfortunately, no. BAFTS is a membership organisation, not a certifying body which means we don’t take responsibility for our members’ customer service.

I have a concern about a BAFTS member. Where do I complain?

Thanks for letting us know. In accordance with our Compliance Procedure You can email our Membership and Monitoring Co-ordinator Joanna on membershipsupport@bafts.org.uk in strictest confidence,
